North Texas sisters among those killed in Hill Country flooding, their grandparents are still missing

KERRVILLE, Texas — A North Texas family is mourning the loss of two sisters who died in the Hill Country flooding, as they hold out hope that the two girls’ grandparents are found. 

The Harber family shared the devastating news that 13-year-old Blair and 11-year-old Brooke were found 15 miles from where they were swept away.  The girls’ grandparents, Mike and Charlene Harber, remain missing.

According to Jennifer Harber, her brother, R.J., and sister-in-law Annie identified the bodies of 13-year-old Blair and 11-year-old Brooke, who had been missing in the flooding. They were found 12 hours after the catastrophic flooding in the Texas Hill Country. She said prayers are now needed to bring her parents, Mike and Charlene, home.

Jennifer Harber told KHOU 11’s Amanda Henderson that the storm woke her brother up at 3:30 a.m., and when he and Annie went to check on their girls and Mike and Charlene, who were in another house. When R.J. stepped out of bed, Jennifer said he noticed the house was already flooding. The water was so high that they had to break a window out.

When they got outside, Jennifer said the water was too high to reach the home where the girls and their grandparents were, so he and Annie woke up neighbors, likely saving their lives, to borrow a kayak. But the water was too rough to make it to the house where their family members were. They ultimately had to be rescued themselves.

Jennifer said the bodies of Brooke and Blair were found on Saturday in Kerrville.

“When they were found, their hands were locked together,” Jennifer said.

Jennifer had one request.

“Please help us find my parents so we can have closure and bring them home.”
